Artist Biographies

Charlie Bertini
Charlie Bertini, a native of Cortland and leader of the AppleJazz Band, has an impressive list of credits, having performed with Ray Charles, Liza Minelli, Henry Mancini, Johnny Mathis and Burt Bacharach. When not touring with Bill Allred's Classic Jazz Band, Charlie produces CDs for various artists and jazz record labels. His musical gifts reach far beyond the bell of his trumpet. He also serenades, jokes, and above all, treats his audience to an outstanding array of first-class talent. The excitement of each AppleJazz Festival exceeds the previous year’s.

Terry Myers
Saxophonist Terry Myers will join us from Orlando, Florida, where he leads his own big band in performances that pay tribute to Benny Goodman. Terry has traveled the world, performing at international and U.S. jazz festivals. He has played with such notable musicians as Bob Haggart, Milt Hinton, Butch Miles, Warren Vaché, Kenny Davern, Flip Phillips, Walt Lavinsky, Billy Butterfield, Wild Bill Davison, Louie Bellson, Rosemary Clooney, Eddie Higgins, Jane Jarvis, Larry Elgart, Vince Giordano, Ira Sullivan, and Bobby Shew.

Dick Chave
Trombonist Dick Chave played on Bourbon Street in New Orleans for many years, and now performs with the enormously popular Soda Ash Six, and several Syracuse area big bands. Chave's talents on the AppleJazz stage never cease to amaze his audience, and he is a veteran of the AppleJazz Band, having performed with them since 1985.

Jeff Phillips
Also from Florida comes astounding keyboardist Jeff Phillips. Jeff’s energy and ability fit right in with the veterans of the AppleJazz Band, and he charges the rhythm section up like a bolt of lightning. Jeff has performed in the U.S. and Europe at major jazz festivals, and can be heard on recordings with Bill Allred’s Classic Jazz Band. Jeff has become a favorite performer for many AppleJazz fans.

Ronnie France
Syracuse's finest bassist, Ronnie France, has an impressive background as well. He toured with the Tonight Show’s Doc Severinsen, Cabo Frio, Nancy Kelly, and Allen Vizzutti (formerly of Chick Corea’s band). France also performed with The Atlas Linen Company, which featured Ronnie Leigh and the late Larry Arlotta.

Dave Hanlon
Local talent abounds at AppleJazz. Dave Hanlon on drums and Ronnie Leigh on vocals have both been honored with prestigious SAMMY awards. Hanlon has become an AppleJazz favorite, performing drum solos of incredible content and stamina during a percussion-laden “Caravan” at past festivals. He also leads his own band, CookBook, which is one of Central New York’s favorite groups.

Mark Doyle
Guitarist Mark Doyle was raised by musical parents in Auburn, NY. He studied extensively in classical and jazz piano, appearing on local TV and radio shows by age ten. After the Beatles appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show, he switched to guitar. His first band, Jukin' Bone, was signed to RCA when Mark was still in his late teens.

In the '80's, Mark worked as session guitarist for Daryl Hall & John Oates, Judy Collins, and Leo Sayer. He embarked on many world tours and TV appearances as the lead guitarist for Meat Loaf. A high point of this period for Mark was arranging and singing the background vocals on "Straight From The Heart" by Bryan Adams.

As an arranger, Mark has written string orchestrations for New Kids On The Block, Rick Wes, Perfect Gentlemen, Tiffany, The Superiors, Seiko, and The Stylistics.

Mark currently resides in Syracuse, N.Y., where he continues to actively produce and perform on a regular basis. He has recently completed two critically acclaimed solo albums of guitar instrumentals - the moody "Guitar Noir" and the neo-psychedelic "Out of the Past." Other new recordings include the double live CD and DVD of his "Solstice At The Cathedral", and two brand new albums that Mark produced for old friend Andy Pratt: "Cover Me" and "I'm All Right."

He has produced and co-written an album called “The Truth” with life-long friend and singer Joe Whiting.

Ronnie Leigh
Ronnie Leigh is one of the busiest vocalists in Central New York, appearing at area jazz festivals and on recordings, as well as being called upon to host many local events. His vocal range and charismatic charm make him a premier vocalist, and he never fails to bring an audience to its feet.

Lauren-Jessica Bertini
Lauren-Jessica Bertini is a young artist with a fantastic voice, great piano technique and a unique talent for songwriting. She can tell a story and make you believe and feel every word. Since her first appearance at AppleJazz in 2006, she has played piano and sung each year. She is active in the musical theatre program at her high school and continues to enjoy singing, playing piano and performing at every opportunity.

Alyssa Johnson
Alyssa Johnson, a high school freshman from Orlando, FL, has been performing since she was in grade school. Her gospel-influenced singing exhibits an emotional growth that is far beyond her years. With a powerful and soulful voice, Alyssa will amaze you in her vocal duets with her best friend, Lauren Bertini.

Charlie has lined up an outstanding group of musicians for this summer’s show. As always, he promises to give you the best entertainment he can provide. He’s been called the “hottest” trumpet player east of San Francisco,” and he can deliver.

The AppleJazz concert is Saturday, June 5th. Doors open at 5 PM; music begins at 6 PM
